College Development Program for Future Leaders

Claims Adjuster

Learning the business from the ground up to become a future leader of the company

What is the Claims Professional Training Program?

We have designed a structured, comprehensive training and development program that offers an opportunity to learn the claims business from the ground up, an opportunity for you to showcase your ability, and the potential to become a future leader of the organization.

You’ll have a mentor and go through on-the-job, classroom and online training while moving through a two- to four-year series of job assignments through the various disciplines within claims. You’ll learn about many facets of the insurance industry as well as specific adjusting and/or appraising skills for a variety of claims submitted by customers.

How long does it take to move up?

As you learn and are exposed to different aspects of the claims business, we’ll review your progress, skills and abilities. As you progress, we’ll begin to look for opportunities for increased responsibility, whether leadership/managerial or technical. The opportunities and career paths in claims (and potentially other areas of the company) are almost endless – and the knowledge and skills you acquire will be transferable to many areas of our business.

What is the role of the Claims department?

As a property and casualty insurance company, we exist to help our customers when things go wrong. Perhaps it’s a car accident and a customer needs to find a way to get around until his or her car is fixed. Perhaps it’s a house fire and a family needs a place to sleep.  Or maybe it’s damage to a small business and the owner needs support to keep going until the damage can be repaired.

At these moments, our claims adjusters are the face of the company. They are the people who work with our customers to help them understand their policies and resolve their claims so that they can get back on their feet.

What do claims adjusters do?

A claims adjuster’s day is never boring. They investigate claims, determine legal liability, resolve disputes and negotiate settlements – all in wide variety of situations. They routinely communicate with customers and consult with lawyers, medical professionals, engineers, small business owners and other professionals.

Who are we looking for?

Ideal candidates for claims positions possess solid analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills and have a passion for customer service. In addition, they should have a Bachelor of Arts degree in business, insurance, criminal justice or liberal arts and a 3.0 GPA.

They also should have strong verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational and time management abilities and the ability to think critically. With the collaborative nature of the position, they also should be good team players.
