The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc. To Webcast First Quarter Earnings Conference Call

— Mass Teachers Association non-profit promotes summer reading
to enhance scholastic readiness

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 16, 2008) – As baseball season gets underway, The Hanover Insurance Group Foundation, Inc., today announced that it is teaming up with The Boston Red Sox and Reading Matters, the charitable arm of the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) to deliver a literacy program for children in kindergarten through grade eight and another program to recognize All-Star educators.

The literacy program—the Red Sox Reading Game—stimulates interest and provides incentive for children to be active readers during the summer months, enhancing scholastic readiness and improving students’ chances for academic success in the fall. Since its beginning in 2000, the program has inspired tens of thousands of children to read hundreds of thousands of books.

“The Hanover, together with its employees is proud to support our community, as we continue our efforts to support youth and education,” said Linda M. McGowan, president of The Hanover Insurance Group Foundation, Inc. “The Red Sox Reading Game is a fun way to encourage children to read during the summer, setting the stage for their continued academic involvement and success.”

Children who participate in the program pledge to read nine books—one for each position on the baseball field—and enter a drawing to win free tickets to a Red Sox game. This year, the program will welcome 100 students and their teachers to a Red Sox home game at Fenway Park.

The Hanover Foundation also will sponsor the Most Valuable Educator program, which invites students to nominate a teacher for special recognition. Winning teachers are selected from among all student nominating essays and invited to participate in a pre-game recognition ceremony.

Red Sox captain Jason Varitek makes a pitch for Reading Matters

Boston Red Sox catcher and team captain Jason Varitek serves as the team’s lead player in the Red Sox Reading Game, appearing on posters and in other promotional materials, along with Boston Red Sox mascot, Wally, the green monster.

“This partnership is designed to send a crystal clear message to Massachusetts’ children that reading is important and fun,” said MTA President Anne E. Wass. “We are convinced that the MTA Red Sox Reading Game is a great way to promote summer reading throughout Massachusetts.”

To help promote the program, the Massachusetts Teachers Association will distribute thousands of posters to local schools, together with bookmarks that also serve as discount coupons at popular bookstores.
