Identity Fraud Protection

Personal Safeguards Against Identity Fraud

Although you can't completely eliminate the threat, there are several ways in which you can protect yourself from identity theft and fraud. Before revealing personal identification information, find out how it will be used and if it will be shared with others:

Don’t give credit card or bank account numbers over the phone, unless you placed the call and know the business.

  • Don’t provide account numbers or financial information to unknown persons or entities via email and the Internet.
  • Provide your Social Security number only when required. Don’t have it printed on your checks.
  • Properly dispose of documents with personal information; tear up receipts, bank statements, expired credit cards and credit offers.
  • Be careful when using your bank account PIN that others are not able to see the number.
  • Check your monthly bills and statements for inaccuracies; follow-up with creditors if bills do not arrive in their usual cycle.
  • Obtain a copy of your credit history once a year to check for errors.

What To Do If You Suspect Identity Fraud

Regardless of measures you take to protect your personal financial information, it is up to you to take action promptly if you think you are a victim of identity fraud.

  • Contact the necessary financial institutions, credit card companies and other creditors.
  • Report the crime to the law enforcement agencies with jurisdiction in your case.
  • Call the fraud units of the credit reporting companies:
    • Experian, (888) 397-3742
    • Equifax, (800) 525-6285
    • Trans Union, (800) 680-7289
  • If you believe your driver's license has been copied or misused by someone else, notify your state department of motor vehicles.
  • Alert the Social Security Administration, (800) 269-0271, if you think your Social Security number has been fraudulently used.
  • You can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) by calling (877) 438-4338. The FTC provides information that can help resolve problems associated with ID fraud.
  • Document your phone calls and correspondence with any parties regarding your situation. Note time spent and expenses incurred in your follow-up efforts. Hold onto copies of all correspondence and documents involved in your case.
