Take Precautions At Home
- Stay off the telephone and avoid using all electrical appliances. Even though electric lines and phones have lightning arresters, the current can surge into a house from lightning striking a nearby pole.
- Avoid open doorways or windows and metallic objects.
- An antenna atop or next to a house may increase the lightning risk. To avoid fire or structural damage, have the antenna bonded to the lightning conductor cable on your house by a professional electrician. A surge protector should also be installed on the television lead-in wire.
- Limbs from struck trees can be dangerous if they fall around your property or on your home.
