Don't Approach Strange Animals

  • It's a very old saying, but the message is just as true today. Children especially need to be educated on proper ways to interact with animals.
  • Children suffer the majority of injuries by pets or other animals. They have a natural attraction to pets, and they are small, which gives dogs the feeling they can easily dominate a child.
  • Never leave a young child alone with a pet. Children have a tendency to grab animals to play and often end up bitten. Avoid running past a strange dog. Walk away slowly from an attacking dog. A dog's instinct is to pursue a running person.
  • Use a loud firm voice when giving an order to a dog. Do not scream though, as this can cause the dog to become more aggressive.
  • If you are attacked, use any object you have to wedge between you and the animal. Many times, the dog will struggle with the item and allow you to get away. If this does not work, drop to the ground, curl into a ball and cover your ears with your hands and lie still.
