The Hanover CARES Refund

At The Hanover, we’re committed to being there when you need us most. We recognize that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has created unprecedented challenges. With the shelter-in-place and stay-at-home orders resulting in fewer drivers on the road and, in turn, fewer accidents, we are pleased to return 15% of April and May auto premiums to eligible customers through The Hanover CARES Refund, pending regulatory approval.

To make this as easy as possible, no action is required. If you are eligible you will automatically receive the credit. Please review our frequently asked questions below for additional details about when and how your account will be credited.

+Do I qualify for the refund and when will I receive it?

All customers with an active personal auto policy qualify for The Hanover CARES Refund. At this time, the refund does not include business auto policies.

To make this process easy for you, you do not need to take any action. Customers with an active policy at the end of April will be automatically credited in May. Customers with an active policy at the end of May will be automatically credited in June.

+Where and when will I see my refund?

The Hanover CARES Refund will be a credit of 15% of the monthly auto premium for April and May. For example, for an annual auto premium of $1,200, the monthly premium would be $100. The refund would be $15 in April and $15 in May.

+How will I get my refund? Do I need to do anything?

To make this process easy for you, you do not need to take any action. The refund will be automatically credited to your premium, as follows:

  • If you have paid-in-full and do not have an account balance on any of your policies with us, you will receive two refund checks. One in May and another in June. If you have other Hanover policies with a payment due, we will apply your credit to these balances first.
  • If you pay by electronic funds transfer (EFT), a credit will be applied to your monthly withdrawal in May and June.
  • If you have a remaining balance on your auto policy, a credit will be applied to your balance owed in May and June.

+Where can I find out how much I will be receiving?

The Hanover CARES Refund will be processed in the next month's billing cycle and will be credited throughout the following month. You will also be able to view your refund amount on My Hanover Policy once it has been credited to your policy.

+I’ve already paid my premium in full, how will I receive a refund?

If you have paid-in-full and do not have an account balance on any of your policies with us, you will receive two refund checks. One in May and another in June. If you have other Hanover policies with a payment due, we will apply your credit to these balances first. The amount of your Hanover CARES Refund will appear on your account bill. You will also be able to view the refund amount on My Hanover Policy. If you do not have a My Hanover Policy account, we encourage you to register today for an account.

+I pay my auto insurance bill using EFT. How will I receive my refund?

If you use EFT, a credit will be applied to your monthly withdrawals in May and June. The amount of your Hanover CARES Refund will appear on your account bill. You will also be able to view the refund amount on My Hanover Policy. If you do not have a My Hanover Policy account, we encourage you to register today for an account.

+I made a change to my policy. Will I still receive the credit?

The Hanover CARES Refund will be based on the auto premium at the end of April and at the end of May. For any mid-month policy changes impacting premium, the refund will be based on the premium amount after the change was made. The amount of your Hanover CARES Refund will appear on your account bill. You will also be able to view the refund amount on My Hanover Policy. If you do not have a My Hanover Policy account, we encourage you to register today for an account.

+If my new auto policy was effective as of April or May, will it qualify for The Hanover CARES premium relief?

All active personal lines auto policies with an effective date as of April 27, 2020 will qualify for the April 15% premium refund, to be paid in May. This includes new business with an effective date as of April 27. All active policies with an effective date as of May 26, 2020 (including new business) will qualify for the 15% May premium refund, to be paid in June.

+Is there any other support The Hanover is offering customers facing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

We understand many are worried about finances and employment. In this unprecedented time, and always, our billing team is prepared to help with billing and payment questions. As a first step, proactively we have placed a 60-day hold on all cancellations for non-payment for all customers through June 1, 2020, unless a later date is required by a specific state. During this time, we will continue to send bills, but we will not cancel for non-payment and late fees will not be assessed.

+I am a business customer. Are my commercial (business) policies eligible for The Hanover CARES Refund?

At this point, The Hanover CARES Refund is only being offered to eligible personal auto customers. For information about the support we are offering to business insurance customers, please review the FAQs in our COVID-19 resource center.

+How can I sign up for paperless?

You may sign up for paperless policy documents and billing directly from My Hanover Policy. If you do not have a My Hanover Policy account, we encourage you to register today for an account.
