The Hanover home evaluation process

We know how important it is to you to have the peace of mind that comes with having the proper coverage for your home. This is why we periodically conduct home evaluations. A home evaluation is typically ordered when a new homeowners insurance policy is purchased, or prior to an upcoming policy renewal.

Traditionally, these are conducted onsite by a third-party property inspection partner, but The Hanover also offers a do-it-yourself home evaluation option.

Why do I need a home evaluation?

A home evaluation helps document the details of your home — its size, features, systems and materials — to help ensure you have the proper coverage. Home evaluations also help determine the cost to rebuild your home in the event of a total loss — what we refer to as "replacement cost" — along with any potential hazards in or around your home. This enables us to make recommendations that help reduce the likelihood of a future claim.

The evaluation will document:

  • Our calculation for the cost to rebuild your home
  • Possible safety recommendations and requirements
  • Square footage of home
  • Attached structures and interior features

According to CoreLogic, 64% of U.S. homes are undervalued for the purpose of insurance by an average of 19%.

Home self-evaluations

For eligible customers, we offer you the opportunity to conduct your own home evaluation, by submitting select photos of your property. With the self-evaluation option, you can avoid having an on-site visit from an inspector.

With The Hanover, this is performed with an app called Hover, which allows you to complete your home evaluation using your smart phone in roughly 15 minutes.

How do I perform my self-evaluation?

You will receive an email or text message on the policy's effective date with the information necessary to complete this step. You will be asked to download the Hover app to your mobile device. The app will give you step-by-step directions to complete your self-evaluation and guide you through the photo-taking process.

Am I required to complete the self-evaluation?

We require a evaluation of your home, but whether or not you perform it, or a third-party home inspector does, is up to you. The self-evaluation must be completed within 14 days of receiving the email from Hover. After the link expires, you'll be notified by mail that a property inspection vendor will be performing an in-person evaluation of your home.

Will the self-evaluation affect my policy?

The information gathered through the self-evaluation will be reviewed to help determine if you are adequately insured. If we have any questions after reviewing the completed self-evaluation, we will work closely with your agent to obtain additional information.

Who do I contact for technical support?

You can access the Contact Us section by selecting the three-line icon on the top left-hand corner of the app. For your convenience, an email link for homeselfeval@hanover.com is provided should you need assistance.
