Counterfeit check alert

It has come to our attention that a third party, (or parties), is issuing counterfeit Hanover checks to individuals as part of a scam. If you receive a Hanover check you are not expecting, we advise you to confirm it is authentic before you try to cash it. These counterfeit checks are allegedly being sent as payment to individuals who have posted items for sale, for consideration of some forms of employment, or in exchange for placing an advertisement or auto wrap on a vehicle.

Please note that an authentic Hanover check will include the payee’s name and address, provide The Hanover’s customer service number (800-922-8427), and typically be delivered via the U.S. Postal Service as first class mail. The counterfeit checks we have seen do not include the payee’s address, often arrive via priority mail, FedEx, UPS or a carrier other than the U.S. Postal Service, and may include a small circle in the middle of the check, toward the bottom, labeled: Heat Sensitive Shield.

If you have any questions about a Hanover check, please contact: Christine Romeo, AVP Internal Audit.
