Sustainability:
A priority at The Hanover

People | Places | Performance | Awards and recognitions

Sustainability for our company is a focus on environmental, social and governance practices combined with a dedication to good corporate citizenship. It starts with our people. It extends to the places where we work and live. And it’s made possible by the performance of our organization.

People

Our people are our greatest asset. They’re at the heart of our business and central to every decision we make.

Embracing inclusivity, living our CARE values, developing and educating our team members, and supporting our communities are foundational in our approach to sustainability and success as a company.

Every day, the 4,600 talented and committed individuals who represent The Hanover come together to deliver on our promises and make the world a better place. We do that by showing up for our customers, our team members and our communities.”

Places

As a vital support system for individuals and businesses in times of crisis, the property and casualty industry is rising to meet the evolving challenges of our world. Climate change brings with it natural disasters that are more frequent and more severe. The Hanover and the broader insurance industry play an increasingly important and unique role in educating and responding to customers, effectively managing risk, advocating for a sustainable society and reducing our carbon footprint.

Managing our carbon footprint

Over the past several years, we have identified and acted on opportunities to mitigate the carbon emissions we produce, while also increasing transparency by tracking and reporting progress.

Reducing expected energy consumption by 1.2 kilowatts

per year on a go-forward basis

Providing electrical vehicle charging stations

for employees and visitors with hybrid and electric vehicles

Recycled 64 tons of waste material

across office locations

Purchased renewable energy certificates (RECs)

equal to 100% of our electricity consumption at our corporate headquarters*

*RECs purchased from our competitive electric supplier (sourced from wind resources) at our corporate headquarters in Worcester, MA.

Responsible investments

We incorporate environmental, social and governance factors in our decision making as part of our fundamental investment research process.

Performance

Our actions are guided by a strong corporate governance structure that is grounded in a deep commitment to ethical business practices. The support for our customers and agency partners, the commitments to our communities, and the work within the industry to address increasing climate-related volatility – all of it is made possible by our performance. And that performance is driven and supported by the overall governance of our organization.

Our company’s Code of Conduct is integral to our culture and sets clear expectations for our business and professional behavior, ensuring we continue to hold ourselves to the highest of ethical standards — something that is essential to our continued success.”
