The personal information we and our vendors collect varies based on what products you have with us and may not include all of these examples.

If you submit the personal information of another person, such as about your employees, dependents, or other beneficiaries, you represent that you have obtained the authorization from that person to submit such personal information to us.

Automobile Telematics Program

If you are a customer who has chosen to enroll in our automobile telematics program, and has downloaded and use the corresponding mobile application, we collect information from this program related to your driving practices and behaviors obtained through the application’s telematics capabilities, including information such as the start and end time of drives, mileage, driving speed, and hard braking. We also collect information related to your use of the mobile application, including the device ID, Wi-Fi status, and geolocation information of the device running the application, and information about application status and usage.

Depending on your device or mobile application permission settings, the mobile application may have access to the following information from your mobile device:

  1. Location (may include precise or approximate location).
  2. Wi-Fi connection information (view your Wi-Fi connections to connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi).

These mobile application permission settings allow you to access or use certain features within the mobile application. You may change your mobile application permission settings. By changing your mobile application permission settings, you may affect your ability to access or use certain features on the mobile application. Depending on the operating system of your mobile device, you may have the option to delete your registered account through the mobile application. Please note that deleting your registered account and/or the mobile application will not delete the information that The Hanover maintains about you that we are required to maintain to provide you our Services or to satisfy legal requirements.

Additionally, you may be able to log in to the mobile application using your device’s login features such as using a passcode or your fingerprint. These device login features are facilitated through your device and not The Hanover, and we have no control over such features, which you can change by accessing your device settings and preferences.

Why We Use Personal Information

We may use or otherwise process the personal information described above for the following purposes:

We keep the categories of personal information described above for as long is necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy or otherwise authorized by law. This generally means holding the information for as long as one of the following apply:

Additional Disclosures for California Residents

This section applies to The Hanover’s processing of personal information of California residents subject to the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended from time to time, and the applicable regulations (the “CCPA”). To the extent the provisions of the Privacy Policy conflict or are inconsistent with the provisions set forth in these Additional Disclosures for California Residents, the provisions in this section shall control for California consumers.

This section applies to our current practices, as well as or activities within the last 12 months.

How We Collect, Use, and Disclose Personal Information

Depending on the nature of your interactions with us and our Services, we and our vendors may have collected, used, and disclosed the personal information described in the Collection, Use, and Disclosure section above from both online and offline sources. In addition, we may collect the following categories of personal information that we process as set out in the Why We Use Personal Information and How We Disclose Personal Data sections above:

  • Sensitive personal information, including Social Security number, driver’s license number, passport number, medical information, racial or ethnic origin, citizenship or immigration status, and disability status.

The Hanover does not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that trigger the right to limit the use and disclosure of sensitive personal information for California residents.

How Long We Retain Personal Information

We keep the categories of personal information described above for as long is necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy or otherwise authorized by law. This generally means holding the information for as long as one of the following apply:

  • Your personal information is reasonably necessary to manage our operations, to manage your relationship with us, to provide goods or services, or to satisfy another purpose for which we collect the information;
  • Your personal information is reasonably necessary to carry out a disclosed purposes that is reasonably compatible with the context in which the personal information was collected;
  • The personal information is reasonably required to protect or defend our rights or property (which will generally relate to applicable laws that limit actions in a particular case); or
  • We are otherwise required or permitted to keep your personal information by applicable laws or regulations.

California Privacy Rights

As a California resident, you have the following privacy rights regarding your personal information:

  • The right to know and access the personal information we have collected about you, including:
    • The categories of personal information that we process;
    • The categories of sources form which the personal information is collected;
    • Our purposes for collecting or processing personal information;
    • The categories of recipients to whom we disclose personal information; and
    • The specific pieces of personal information we have collected.
  • The right to delete personal information that we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions.
  • The right to correct inaccurate or incomplete personal information that we maintain about you.
  • The right to opt out of sale and sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not sell or share personal information, so we do not offer this right through our Services. However, if you download and use a browser supporting the Global Privacy Control (“GPC”) browser signal, we honor GPC signal opt outs. If you choose to use the GPC signal, you will need to turn it on for each supported browser or browser extension you use and for each device you may use.

You can submit a request by using our CCPA Privacy Rights Request Form or calling 800-446-8379. To verify the identity of the requestor and authority to make the request, you may be required to provide your name, email address, and other unique information that we may determine is required in order to connect you to the information that we retain (e.g., The Hanover policy number, claim number, or government-issued identification number). We will respond to your request as soon as we can, and no later than legally required. We will also confirm receipt of your request within 10 business days of receipt. You may make up to 2 requests in any 12-month period.

We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights under the CCPA.

California’s “Shine the Light” Law

If you are a California resident, you are entitled, once a year, free of charge, to request information regarding our disclosure, if any, of certain categories of personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes in the preceding calendar year. We do not share personal information with third parties for their own direct marketing purposes without your consent or without providing the ability to opt out.
